Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) said Monday she won’t rule out the idea of an “all black” political party, adding that it is time for African-Americans to have their own political party in the United States.
During an appearance on The Breakfast Club radio show, Waters was asked if she believed it was time for African-Americans to create their own political party.
“No, not at this point,” Waters said. “You have to show that you’re willing and you’re able to put the numbers together and exercise your influence.”
“We still are not voting our influence yet,” she added. “What we should do is organize our power, exercise our power, particularly in the Democratic Party because that’s where most of us are.”
The California congresswoman said that when African-Americans fully participate in politics, “then you can raise that kind of question — whether we are strong enough to talk about organizing another party.”
Though Waters did not completely rule out the idea of an all-black political party, she did suggest that it could only be done when African-Americans become “strong enough” and more involved in politics.
Waters’ remarks came just one day after she suggested that President Donald Trump is partly responsible for the leaks of classified information from the White House to the media.
She told AM Joy host Joy Reid on MSNBC Sunday that officials were leaking highly classified information on President Trump “because he defined himself as someone who cannot be trusted.”
“The president gave classified information to Russians in the White House. Our ally, Israel, was very upset with us. So start with him, number one. Number two, if people around you are leaking in the way they’re doing, they’re trying to tell us something,” Waters said.
Waters suggested that since Trump isn’t a “credible president,” she welcomes leaks of classified information against the Trump White House because it offers people a new source of information.
“Of course we don’t want classified information leaked out, and I don’t think they would do that with a credible president. They’re doing that to this president because he defined himself as someone that cannot be trusted, someone that will get this country in trouble,” Waters said.
“And so I welcome the leaks. I welcome the information. That keeps us focused on him and talking about what is wrong with him,” Waters added.
